Saturday, June 26, 2010, played host to Mark Slater’s all-amateur “Colosseum Combat XIII” at the Kokomo Event Center in Kokomo, Indiana.  Announcer Brady Davis began the event with a prayer subsequent to the National Anthem adding class to the evening.

Cotrell throws a Superman punch

The bantamweight’s began the night with William Cottrell set to square off with Sean Silvers.  Both fighters came out looking to exchange punches, but neither could find their range.  As the first round wore on, it was apparent that Cottrell was the better prepared fighter.  However, Silvers proved to be game as he made it out of the first round virtually unscathed.  Cottrell came out in the second round looking as if he had something to prove.  He noticed that Silvers was breathing deeply and moved in for the kill.  Cottrell landed a kick to Silvers outer leg and then a right that knocked Silvers down.  Cottrell continued to pour it on Silvers until the sound of the bell.  The third began where the previous had ended.  Cottrell landed multiple unanswered leg kicks to Silvers lead leg.  He then landed a huge right hand and rushed Silvers.  After pinning Silvers against the cage, Cottrell was able to land a big knee in the clinch dropping Silvers to the canvas.  After the knee, the two wrestled for position the remainder of the round.  The decision was given Cottrell unanimously 30-27.

George shows concern for Burchfield

With the first fight done, the other side of the weight spectrum (heavyweight) prepared to fight.  Chris Burchfield and Cornelius George were scheduled to battle for three rounds, but the fight would only take forty-seven seconds.  George wasted absolutely no time going straight after Burchfield.  George landed a heavy shot that dropped Burchfield.  George pounced on Burchfield and landed multiple punches and elbows.  Despite Burchfield being knocked unconscious, George was given the victory via T.K.O.

For the next fight, the card moved down a weight class to feature light heavyweights Jerry Brooks and Bobby Pain.  Both fighters attempted to find their range until Pain was able to get the better part of a scramble and take the fight to the ground.  From there Pain was able to utilize his ground and pound from the side mount.  Brooks then rolled to escape Pain’s punches giving up his back.  Pain’s corner instantly noticed the opportunity for a rear-naked choke.  Pain listened to his instructions and attempted a rear-naked choke.  The fight was ruled a victory for Pain via rear-naked choke, but Pain’s attempt really looked to be more of a neck crank.

The night’s next fight was in the welterweight division pitting Jason Murphy against Nick Floyd.  Floyd threw a right kick that landed plush with Murphy’s leg.  He then charged in throwing a left and right.  Murphy attempted a shot, but to his demise was caught in a guillotine and choked unconscious.  Floyd was given the submission victory twenty-six seconds of the fight.

The card stayed in the welterweight division for the next fight with Corey Draughn fighting Vershawn Burke.  Draughn was able to hip toss Burke seconds into the fight.  Upon hitting the mat Burke instantly gave Draughn his back.  Draughn made a point to lock a body triangle, weakening Burke’s defenses.  From there Draugh was able to apply a rear-naked choke giving him the victory.

Mundy with the Armbar that finished McCoy

Featherweights Blake McCoy and Clay Mundy were next on the card.  The two locked up immediately upon engagement.  Mundy attempted a throw, but fell pulling McCoy into his guard.  From there Mundy was able land a beautiful armbar giving him the victory via submission twenty-three seconds into round one.

The fights continued going down in weight as the bantamweights were yet again featured.  This time however, Orlando Lopez and Brandyn Blacharski were set to square off.  Lopez was awarded the victory via TKO.

The lightweights made their debut on the card with B.J. Messmore and Henry Goonen.  Goonen was able to get the victory via arm triangle despite Messmore’s best efforts.

Heavyweights Joe Beekman and Jeremy Roberts were in the night’s ninth fight of the evening.  Beekman was awarded the victory in the second round via tap to strikes.

Newell finishing Conley

The card returned to the featherweight division with Daniel Newell and Cody Conley.  Upon touching gloves, Conley through a blatant cheap shot while Newell’s guard was down.  Despite this, Newell controlled the majority of the first round from the mount.  In the second round, Newell yet again controlled the fight.  Newell was able to mount Conley again and get Conley in a triangle (from the mount).  From this point forward, Newell landed numerous unanswered shots, forcing the referee to stop the contest, thus giving Newell the victory via T.K.O.

The light heavyweights took the cage yet again as Ethan Cronk and Ariel Andrade.  Cronk won the contest via guillotine in the first round.

Derrick Duke and Matt Meyers were featured in the night’s next bout at a catch weight of 165 lbs.  As the bell rang, both fighters looked eager to engage.  Duke was able to use his quickness to take

Meyers attempts one of many Armbars

Meyers down.  While on the ground, Meyers attempted an armbar, but was slammed by Duke.  The slam forced Meyers to abandon the attempt and gave Duke great position.  Duke took advantage of this situation (utilizing his ground and pound) for the remainder of the round.  The second round was a mirror image to the first with Duke shooting and taking Meyers to the ground.  After a brief period Meyers was able to stand-up only to be taken down again.  Meyers yet again was able to stand-up and this time stuff Duke’s next attempt.  The round ended with the two exchanging punches.  The third round began with Meyers showing a sense of urgency.  He immediately went towards Duke throwing a left and right.  After the charge, Duke shot, but was stuffed by Meyers.  After the failed attempt, Duke shot again, this time being successful.  Duke was unable to inflict any damage on Meyers while on the ground allowing Meyers to attempt a guillotine (and stand-up).  Duke was able to escape the guillotine, but found himself in the same situation as he shot almost immediately upon escape.  The round ended with Duke escaping the guillotine and Meyers trying to coax Duke back into his guard.  When the third round bell sounded, the crowd stood, applauding both fighters for their efforts.  Duke was awarded the victory by split decision.

Ref Justin Hahn steps in just after the KO punch

The next fight featured two featherweights in Brandon Lawson and Vermaine Burke.  In the first round both fighters exchanged blows and then took the fight to the ground.  Burke was able to control Lawson for the majority of the first round coming out on top in every scramble.  The second round, however, was a different story.  Lawson was able to take Burke to the ground and mount him. From the mount Lawson was able to land a series of punches knocking Burke unconscious.  This gave Lawson the K.O. victory one minute and fifty-two seconds into the second round.

The card returned to the welterweight division as Joe Meyer was set to fight Pat Reck.  Joe Meyer was able to land an armbar giving him the victory one minute and fifty seconds into the first round.

Justin King and Michael Shields met at a catchweight of 140 lbs. in the evening’s next bout.  Though the bout went the duration, Shields was never able to stop King’s takedowns or action from the top.  King was awarded the decision unanimously 30-27.

Smith sets up the Armbar to finish Franklin

Welterweights Markous Smith and Steve Franklin were featured in the next fight of the evening.  Smith was able to utilize superior striking forcing Franklin to move in to the clinch.  From the clinch, Franklin was able to pick Smith up and take him to the ground.  Unfortunately, for Franklin, the ground is where he met his demise.  Smith was able to throw an armbar that had Franklin seemingly tapping before it was at its peak.  Smith was given the victory via armbar one minute and fifty-seven seconds into the first round.

In the night’s main event, middleweights Michael Eickenberry and Jeremy Craig were prepared to fight.  After a brief exchange, Eickenberry land a big shot that dropped Craig.  After the shot, Eickenberry mounted Craig and rained down punches.  Craig was able to gain his composure and get Eickenberry back into his guard.  This victory was short-lived as Eickenberry moved right back into the full mount and rain punches down again.  Eickenberry’s unanswered shots forced the referee to intervene and call a halt to the bout.

All in all, the night proved to be successful.  Mark Slater’s all-amateur card covered the entire spectrum of mixed martial arts.  We at cagecraze.com look forward to future Colloseum Combat events.
